Modern Foreign Languages

Bonjour tous!

Pupils at Wybers Wood Academy learn French in Key Stage 2. All Key Stage 2 classes have access to a very high-quality foreign languages curriculum using the Language Angels scheme of work and resources.

This scheme progressively develops pupils’ skills in foreign languages through regularly taught and well-planned weekly lessons. Throughout the year, we also have Cultural Days where Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 participate as well. Very good links with the Languages Department at John Whitgift Academy have been developed where teachers from the Academy come to Wybers Wood for the day and teach engaging and enriching lessons to our pupils.

Our intention is that all pupils will develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages, finding them enjoyable and stimulating. Learning a second language will also offer pupils the opportunity to explore relationships between language and identity, develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and the world around them with a better awareness of self, others, and cultural differences. The goal is that they will be working towards becoming life-long language learners.

The four key language learning skills; listening, speaking, reading, and writing will be taught, and all necessary grammar will be covered in an age-appropriate way across the primary phase. This will enable pupils to use and apply their learning in a variety of contexts and help the children to improve. Children will also enjoy accessing the French “Book Nook Corner” where they can read stories written in different languages and can learn about other languages around the world too.

We have had a French visitor – (Claire – A French Assistant) in to help us with our MFL After School Club. The children really enjoyed the after school club where we learnt about France, how to say what our hobbies are, where we live and learnt about French culture – we also played many French games. The children said they really liked how their confidence grew when speaking to Claire (The French Assistant) and became fascinated in learning more about France. This was a really wonderful experience for the children and one where the children were able to integrate with different year groups and speak French to a French native. As you can see the children had so much fun!
