Wybers Girl’s Grab Some Goals!

The Wybers Wood Girl’s Football Team entered their first ever football tournament

! The girl’s team was started up less than a year a go and it has gone better anyone could imagine. Our first session had over 40 girls from three different year groups attending, many of whom had never even kicked a ball before. But, due to their dedication and hardwork they have come on leaps and bounds! Some have even joined teams of their own and play at the weekends too!

On Tuesday 28th September, the girls travelled to Oasis Wintringham Academy for their first ever competitive tournament! Although their were plenty of nerves, everyone was excited to be their!

Our first game was against Old Clee and we started well thanks to a powerful strike from Grimsby Borough’s own Ella Cooper which put us 1-0. Unfortunately Old Clee, got a late goal from a corner to draw them level at 1-1.

Next up was Fairfield, a very tough match but thanks to brilliant defending from Shoshoni Burnett and Chloe Waite, as well as some incredible keeping from Layla Rendall, we kept a clean sheet. At the other end we were very close to grabbing a goal from Elsie-Jae Jackson but the Fairfield keeper kept the tie even with it ending up 0-0.

We played Signhills in our third game and they were just too strong for the girls, beating us 2-0. Although, we came close to grabbing a couple of late goals from Matilda Reveller and Ella Cooper.

It wasn’t the start to the tournament we were hoping for but the girl’s spirits were still as high as the sky before we took on Laceby Stanford! Ella Cooper and Hermionie Cartright put us ahead early doors with some early goals before Matilda Reveller and our centre backs Shoshoni Burnett and Payge Newton each grabbed a goal to win the game 5-0!

We carried on our high spirits against Humberston C of E and thanks to Ella Cooper we grabbed an equaliser after going 1-0 down at the start of the game. We were very unlucky not to grab another from the quick feet of Aaliyah Porritt and Olivia Cross’ pin point passing.

The girl’s put in another impressive performance against Middlethorpe and won 2-0, thanks to a couple of goals from Ella Cooper. The referee remarking that it was the best goal he had seen all day!

Our last game was against Thrunscoe, a team that had won all of their games so far! But thanks to Super Cooper up top we managed to bag an early goal against her old classmate Lucy! Luckily thanks to some great defending and hardwork from Elsie-Jae Jackson and Matilda Reveller we managed to hold on for an incredible 1-0 win!

Everyone had an amazing day! We were really proud of our performances and although we didn’t expect be in the top two to qualify for the next round in Hull, it was well worth the two hours in the rain. Although, I’m not sure if the Wybers’ parents agreed.

We waited for Craig to read out the final standings! 8th place, 7th place, 6th place, 5th place… we still hadn’t heard our names. “And… the next three teams drew on points, so it went down to goal difference’. We had a chance to qualify! 4th place, 3rd place – not Wybers! Which meant one thing! We had qualified for the next round – the county championships in Hull! The Wybers team erupted in joy as they realised they were through!

Well done girls! An amazing day! Roll on Hull and Up the Wybers!
