Computing

The Computing curriculum at Wybers Wood Academy is exciting, rich and challenging. It equips children with the capability to use technology throughout their lives.

All children have access to forty-five minutes of Computing a week. They gain experience with hardware such as desktop computers, iPads, tablets and Bee-Bots. Our UKS2 children have a tablet each and use these throughout the day to assist their education, learning valuable skills about how technology can be used to assist them.

Most of our curriculum is delivered through Teach Computing which is provided by the NCCE. Our children learn how to use data, information and communication technology responsibly. We ensure that they can reap the benefits of the online world with the knowledge of how to keep themselves and others safe.

At Wybers Wood, we are very aware that Computing has a huge effect on our lives and will have a huge impact on the lives and education of our children. Our mission is to give every child a foundation of knowledge and practical skills to ensure that they can thrive in their lives with the aid of technology. We do this by ensuring that basic computing skills that will be essential in their lives are embedded as early as possible in school to ensure that this won’t be a barrier in a child’s future.

We equip pupils with the skills and understanding to use computers effectively. It helps pupils become confident, responsible users of a range of technology. These areas are covered during weekly computing lessons. Pupils learn how digital systems work and how to create and debug programs of their own.

Our curriculum is planned so that pupils can apply and consolidate their computing skills within many areas of our curriculum. These include mathematics, literacy and science. Our PSHE curriculum also provides further opportunities to embed our digital literacy skills. We ensure our pupils understand how to be safe and responsible users of technology. This is both inside and outside of school.

In Early Years:

  • learning environments feature ICT scenarios based on experience in the real world

In Key Stage 1 children:

  • gain an understanding of algorithms
  • write simple programs
  • use data in a range of digital formats
  • be able to navigate their way around a computer independently
  • use technology to create, manipulate and present their ideas and creations

In Key Stage 2 children:

  • develop their use of logical reasoning while designing and debugging program
  • understand how to email safely have an awareness of possible risks
  • can understand and store data on spreadsheets and databases
  • be able to use coding and animation effectively
  • use different formats to create and present

E-Safety

E-Safety is promoted throughout the curriculum, not just through the computing curriculum. It is always on the forefront of our minds and is constantly reinforced through everything we do. Each child in school is shown how to use the internet safely and what to do if they feel safe on the internet at school or at home. Our safe guarding team constantly works to ensure that they are proactive in helping our children to stay safe online.

We have been fortunate enough that E-Safety expert Tim Pinto has been able to work closely with our school and has run workshops for parents, staff and pupils. Some of our Year 6’s are chosen each year to be E-Safety warriors, a role in which they run workshops and present their ideas on how to safe on the internet to their peers and younger children

The computing curriculum teaches pupils how they can keep themselves safe. This includes across a range of online and gaming platforms, including social media. Online safety is taught explicitly within computing sessions and wider curriculum activities.

We work with pupils’ families to ensure our pupils know what to do to keep safe online. We share how to deal with any problems and what they should do if they are concerned or worried.
