Design Technology

“Design is a funny word. Some people think design means how it looks. But of course, if you look deeper, it’s really how it works.”

Steve Jobs

At Wybers Wood Academy, we aim to inspire and challenge pupils. Our Design and Technology curriculum is intended to encourage pupils to use their creativity and imagination to solve real-life problems.

Through each strand of the curriculum, pupils will learn how to create imaginative products with a purpose. They test, evaluate and critique their design ideas and products.  Pupils learn about different engineers, designers, chefs and architects. They learn how their products have changed the world in which we live.

The curriculum strands in design and technology are:

  • Food and Nutrition
  • Construction
  • Electrical components
  • Mechanical components
  • Textiles

Through our key drivers, we develop our pupils to be confident risk-takers. Pupils become well-prepared and resourceful to prepare them for our ever-changing advancing world.

Our key drivers are:

  • Enquiry, skill development, creative and practical learning
  • Problem solving through design to make the world a better place
  • Building and expanding technological language and knowledge

It is our intent to provide as many real-life experiences as possible for our pupils and we offer extra opportunities to practise their Design and Technology skills alongside our rich Reading Enhanced Curriculum.

  • Multiple Design and Technology clubs run throughout the year such as Cooking Club and Sewing Club.
  • National Cooking competitions for each key stage.
  • We have enrolled in a yearly project with the Royal Opera House. This will allow the pupils to design, make, improve and evaluate for a real purpose.
  • We are extremely proud of our kitchen classroom. Each class have extra cooking projects to enhance their skills in the kitchen throughout the year.

Our talented year 4 pupils took part in a national cooking competition. They designed an underwater theme to match our Grimsby fishing heritage. They created a variety of delicious pizzas which consisted of blue pizza dough, to represent the water, and scrumptious toppings creatively shaped into fish and seaweed! The evaluation process proved to be a success!
